Aromatic Dressing

What is aromatic dressing, and why is it amazing?

Aromatic dressing is a daily ritual using your oils that you can easily add to your life. It is all about giving your body the nourishment it deserves. You lovingly massage an oil or a beautiful blend with a carrier oil onto your body while you talk to your body with messages of joy and acceptance. You can create your own personal powerful affirmations and aromatic anchors as you are using your doTERRA oils.

Once you’ve had a shower or bath, start at the bottom of your feet and work upwards towards your heart. Apply the oil in big circular motions as you layer your body with oil and loving words. Start your morning with power and purpose, and finish it with relaxation and peace.

There are endless combinations that you can use! I love to do my aromatic dressing in the morning, while the children are focused on having their breakfast. Often I will do a quick “emotions check” and ask myself how I am feeling. I’ll look at my diary and see what I have on, and think about how I want to feel during the day. If I have lots of things to do, I will pick a motivating combo. If I have something I’m anxious about coming up, Peace & Joy is a good option.

It’s also a great way to include the whole family in using oils. My children love getting to join in with me in the mornings! I’ll ask them which oils they would like to be using, and then we all aromatically dress together. I love that I am empowering my children to be proactive with their health.

Do Essential Oils Ever NOT Work?

This was a question that I was asked recently, and a question I asked as well when I was first investigating oils. So let’s take a look together…

The most important thing is to be realistic with your expectations. Oils are a TOOL and they need to be USED and also used correctly and in conjunction with other associated lifestyle changes. So the example I love to give is that if you stay up until midnight drinking Red Bull, eating chocolate and watching a scary movie then you crawl into bed and put a drop of Lavender on your pillow and expect to suddenly have a good night sleep….you will be disappointed. However, if you are having a nice relaxing shower, going to bed at a regular time, unwinding and maybe reading a calm book or doing some journaling and then using the Lavender oil, of course, it’s going to support your body in achieving a good night’s rest.

“Be realistic with your expectations. Oils are a TOOL and they need to be USED and also used correctly and in conjunction with other associated lifestyle changes.”

You also need to remember that QUALITY is one of the most important considerations when using essential oils. Too often I talk to people who hear about how amazing doTERRA’s oils are, but they aren’t ready to invest so they go and buy a cheaper oil at the pharmacy. Then it doesn’t work (as it’s full of synthetic fillers), so the logical conclusion is that essential oils don’t work. If you are going to have an effective oil then you need to be confident that the oil is 100% pure and that it also contains the correct chemical constituents to be effective. Thankfully, all of doTERRA’s oils are independently tested so we can be confident that our oils WILL work when used appropriately.

While some oils will have an almost instant effect (you take a drop off peppermint on your tongue and bam you will instantly feel it!) other oils are more subtle. So while you might not be able to tell straight away if it’s “working” there may be a gradual improvement.

Another thing to remember too is that everyone is different and the oils will react differently with everyone. While I can say that confidently that Lavender has a chemical constituent called Linalool which is known for it’s calming properties, I can’t say exactly what effect Linalool will have you on you specifically. We all have our individual preference, I personally love Douglas Fir and think it’s the single most amazing smelling oil ever made. My mum thinks it smells like a tree and can’t stand when I diffuse it.

You also need to be taking into consideration the frequency of application. Our bodies metabolise oils in around 3-4 hours, so it’s better to take small amounts throughout the day rather than one big amount once a day. When my baby shows signs of being unwell, I’m applying the On Guard (protective blend) and Melissa oil on his spine and Oregano on his feet every 2-3 hours, as well as diffusing it. I’m also making sure he’s drinking lots of fluid, resting, and having nourishing meals. I can’t just put a drop of On Guard on his spine and then drag him to the play center and make him run around all day.

I know that sadly there are many people who are not supported in their oil journey and so they say “it didn’t work” but on further discussion they didn’t know how to use their oils or what oils to use so they either used the wrong oil, or didn’t use the oils at all. This is why everyone who enrolls with my receives a free wellness consult so that you know how to get the most out of your oils!

I know when I was first starting out and I kept hearing everyone rave about oils I was highly skeptical. I read lots of journal articles, asked my friends, googled loads, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t until I got my oils and had my own AMAZING personal experiences that I was convinced. If that is you, and you’d like to give the oils a try please send me a message.

For those who do LOVE their oils, I’d love if you would share below your AH HA moment when you first realized how amazing these oils are.

Do these oils ACTUALLY work?

So, do these oils ACTUALLY work?

Just in case you missed it – there was an amazing study that was just published using the Aromatouch hand technique and Deep Blue (Ice Blue is the Australian name) and Copaiba.

The study looked at arthritis (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis and chronic inflammation) and was a double blinded randomised placebo controlled trial. This type of trial is a medical study which means that neither the researchers nor the participants know who is getting the placebo and who is getting the treatment. The double blind trial is an extremely important and high quality style of study because it is able to prevent research outcomes from being ‘influenced’ by the placebo effect or observer bias.

Overall the patients who had the Aromatouch hand technique AND the Deep Blue and Copaiba had improved outcome measures (ie they had a greater improvement).

Rollers vs. Touch - what does that mean?

One of the most commonly asked questions I get is “what are the difference between the rollers?”

Here you go!

Touch = essential oil that has been diluted with fractionated coconut oil so it’s safe to apply directly on your skin, even sensitive skin. These are made from 100% pure doTERRA essential oils. With Touch rollers, you can purchase the straight oil, or you can purchase the diluted Touch version, eg. you can get Cheer 5ml or Cheer 10ml Touch.

Roller = not diluted. You may want to take the lid off and split this into a few rollers and add FCO to dilute it. Or you might be fine with using it straight. It’s up to you. For me, Clary Calm is fine to use as it is, but if I don’t dilute Past Tense or Sallubelle it’s way too intense for me. You always want to do a small patch test first to determine if you have any skin sensitivity.

You can purchase Rollers and Touch oils from doTERRA, and they come with a set blend inside.

Or, you can purchase your own empty rollers and then mix up whatever customised blends you like!

As part of your Welcome Pack when you enrol with Lavender & Friends you will receive and “Favorite Blends” sheet with all the rollerball recipes we use and love. During your complimentary Wellness Consult we will also discuss dilution and safe blending so you feel confident in creating your own blends.

Why is Copaiba so AMAZING?

When Anchorman Ron Burgendy said… “I don’t know how to put this but I’m kinda of a big deal” he could have been describing Copaiba! When it was released half the doTERRA population went totally nuts. The other half (me included) kinda scratched our heads and went “So….why exactly is this so exciting??”

Let me tell you, the more I learn about Copaiba the more amazed I am!

Ok so let’s have some science nerd-gasms. So in your body you the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and chemical components that interact with the ECS are called cannabinoids. The ECS regulates lots of functions related to the brain, endocrine system, central nervous system and immune system because it focus on maintaining homeostasis- a state of balance.

Now we can derive from plants three main types of cannabinoids: THC, CBD and BCP. THC and CBD come from cannabis which presents certain legal challenges (and THC also is what makes you trip out so definitely not what we are wanting!)

BCP however is found in other plants like copaiba and has the same therapeutic benefits as the other cannabinoids but without the psychoactive effects. WIN!

So what are ways this superstar can support our body?

MOOD: Balance emotions, soothes anxious feelings, relieves fatigue and tension

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: can kill pathogens, antihistamine so soothes allergies, soothes inflammation

SKIN: Promotes a clear, smooth complexion, reduces signs of aging, promotes cellular regeneration, soothes irritations

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: Supports healthy blood pressure and stimulates healthy blood flow

PAIN: Here’s where it REALLY does some amazing stuff. Very powerful anti-inflammatory, soothes achy muscles and joints, soothes cramps and spasms

NERVOUS SYSTEM: Neuroprotective (supports brain health), regulates inflammatory response, protects nerve cells

IMMUNE SYSTEM: Powerful antioxidants fight free radicals, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: Soothes this system and provides relief from discomfort, protects the liver

HOW I LIKE TO USE IT: I love taking a drop under my tongue every night before bedtime- it helps me to feel so relaxed and calm! I also love to diffuse it.

Perfumes vs. PURE-fumes

Ever since I was a little girl, perfumes gave me headaches. Walking through the cosmetic counter at the department store would see me sneezing and with itchy watery eyes. I used to hate the thought of essential oils because any time I’d ever smelled them (usually in the $2 shop) I would instantly feel unwell.

In preparation for my Pure-fume class I started doing some research on fragrance. Holy MOLY! It’s some seriously scary stuff.

“There is little information available on the materials used in fragrance. Fragrance formulas are considered trade secrets … Fragrance is increasingly cited as a trigger in health conditions such as asthma, allergies and migraine headaches. In addition, some fragrance materials have been found to accumulate in adipose tissue and are present in breast milk. Other materials are suspected of being hormone disruptors. The implications are not fully known, as there has been little evaluation of systemic effects” (Bridges, 2001)

Now I totally understand wanting to smell nice. Having a beautiful fragrance makes you feel amazing! However I do not want to be risking my health by using a toxic chemical. Perfume is now considered to be the new second-hand smoke for it’s negative health impacts and the way in which it lingers and negatively impacts even though who aren’t using it. Indoor pollution can be more polluted than the outdoor pollution in even the most industrialised city, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

If I can convince non-oilers of one thing, I hope that it would be to stop using perfumes and start using PURE-FUMES! You can easily use your essential oils to create a personalised fragrance that has none of the nasty side effects of commercial perfumes. You can make up any combination from floral to musky to woody to uplifting to calming PLUS you are supporting you mental, physical and emotional health.

Imagine if instead of spending $240 on a bottle of Chanel #5 instead you bought a starter kit, some carrier oil, and a diffuser. You have a choice where you invest your money….use it wisely.

If the thought of blending and mixing seems a bit daunting, then I would suggest looking at the Touch oils. They are pure essential oils that have been mixed with fractionated coconut oil and come in an easy to apply roller. I’d suggest Passion roller, it’s got a spicy aroma that will help you feel excited, passionate and joyful. You could add a drop of Citrus Bliss as well as it adds a sweet citrus hint.
